So the season has started and the first matches have been played. I thought it would be good to have some first impressions. I will just look at some of the results that I found interesting/surprising.

I think Minors played out mostly how I expected, if I had to pick a match to be the most surprising it would probably be Kaapstad 1 - 2 Rapid Magyar. It was clear Kaapstad was not going to be as good this season as previous, but I still expected them to beat this Magyar team. Is this a fluke or will Kaapstad struggle even more than expected.

For Majors there was 1 MASSIVE upset. Romana 4 - 2 Shanghai. Shanghai who are poised to absolutely walk the league this season get a defeat in their first match. I do not think anyone saw this one coming. Now it will be interesting to see what this actually signals. Was this just a fluke or will Shanghai carry their bad luck into this season. For AC Romana will this be the season they finally turn the corner and start competing for that promotion?

A smaller surprise was Tokyo performing so well against Xelaju, possibly bad signs for the freshly relegated team.

For my deep dive I'm going to compare the SSL to the other sim leagues that I'm in (PBE, ISFL, and SHL)

First off it's come to my understanding that this league is much more casual compared to the other 3. All I really have to do is just use an affiliate task and that's 6 TPE right there. Making media isn't required that much to be good in this league. In order to be good in the other 3 I have to be much more involved in earning league money to be good, this also depends on what position I selected in each of those leagues as well

The forum layout is very close to the SHL layout. In both leagues the TPE check list is at the top of the page and the way everything is set on both pages is also very similar. Even as I type this I can also see another similarity between the SSL and both the ISFL and SHL is that most of the smilies are next to the box used for typing

The portal is where the differences start to show. While the main player page has the buttons for activity checks (similar to the ISFL, PBE, and ISFL) the layout is completely different from those leagues. Another big difference between the leagues is that the SSL has no weekly training, just seasonal equipment. I''m get into this later. Also in the portal in order to make purchases I have to go to the bank section on the portal to do this. I'm not complaining about this as this is something I figured out pretty quickly

Seasonal equipment is one of the biggest if not the biggest difference between the SSL and other leagues. First off here's a list from least expensive to most expensive league seasonal equipment and how much TPE each is worth

SSL: 7.65M - 18 TPE
SHL: 8.4M - 28 TPE
ISFL: 13.5M - 30 TPE
PBE: 18M - 45 TPE

As you can see the SSL is by far the cheapest league for seasonal equipment and pays out the lowest TPE amount. I'll gladly take this trade off given that this league has no WT, unlike the other 3 leagues and those league WT cost 1.0M for the highest amount of TPE possible (5 TPE). The SSL has the highest AC TPE payout at 6 TPE, again that's a fair trade off in my opinion

Another big difference is how the PT's are handled. For the ISFL, PBE, and SHL requires you to answer a prompt in a minimum of 150 words for the potential to earn 3 TPE. Here the PT is a little more simple IMO; make an article, create a graphic, or record a podcast for 6 TPE. Also do the PT's here actually pay out league money because of how they are handled

A similarity between the 4 leagues is they have some sort of prospect league and players are assigned to the different teams, but it's also a difference because the academy here lasts a season while in the other leagues it last over the course of the offseason while here it's an entire season. Again not complaining as it gives us time to work on our player ratings and we have a chance to be better when we finally get drafted by a team

One last difference is how the draft/seasons work. Like the other leagues the SSL has a minor league, but the minor league team is tied to the SSL pro team. In the ISFL, PBE, and SHL the minor league works separate to the top league and those minor leagues have a cap on how much TPE a user can spend on player ratings. Because of the independence of the minor leagues, the ISFL, PBE, and SHL have two separate drafts in two different seasons. Here it's just one draft and the team that drafts you has a minor league team that works as an affiliate to the SSL pro team. While this league has a promotion/relegation system the other 3 do not and for a good reason

Football had always been my escape after my father died. The one thing where all of my worries and fears disappeared, at least for the next ninety minutes. I never thought I’d reach a point where I wanted to escape football too. What do you turn to when it’s all you have left? Everything up to now had been for this. Everything I’d done and the people I’d lost. I carried on working hard in training, but there was something missing. That spark had gone, like someone had quietly blown out a candle and left the room in darkness. And I would become very acquainted with darkness over the course of the season. You can be as fit as you physically can, but if your mind is elsewhere, it doesn’t matter.

Something my mum spoke about a lot when I was growing up was the power of the mind. She always believed there was more to life than what was immediately visible to us. She talked a lot about the power of the mind, and about focusing on what you wanted rather than what you feared. After losing my dad she lost some of her own spark for a while. The one good thing was that I could see the life and colour returning to her. But I felt like I was losing mine.

We were 4-0 down away to Port Royal in our first game of the second half of the season. As a team we’d stopped doing everything that was working for us before. We seemed to struggle to gain any sort of control of games. It felt like we were on the back-foot straight from the first whistle. I remember how frustrated I was feeling, I mean the whole team was to be fair, but I reminded me of a phrase my mum often said in life, to the point where she had a canvas print of it on her bedroom wall.

It was:
“What you think, you create. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you become.”

All I remember thinking was that I didn’t want to feel like this any more, I didn’t want to lose something else I loved. This was something that had happened too much.

Geronimo had the ball down the left running towards the goal. I was urging the ball to come to me, really visualising it in my mind. He crossed the ball...blocked. But I kept the thought in there, thinking about every detail – the trajectory of the ball, the sound of the crowd increasing in volume as their excitement built, the feel of the ball connecting with my boot as I powered it into the net with my left foot. Except I wasn’t just thinking it, it happened, exactly as I’d pictured it.

We didn’t win the game, but the lessons I learnt that day will stick with me forever.

It was actually outside of football where I began to feel happiest. One morning on my way to training, I saw an old camera for sale in a used goods store. It was the same camera Liv had. She would pop up in my mind from time to time. I’d wonder if she was okay, what she was doing, if she was still into all the same music and films. I wondered if she ever thought about me. We agreed we wouldn’t stay in touch when she left for London. She said that chapter of our lives was over and we both needed to start the next chapter on our own.

I bought the camera. I started taking it out more and more, it really helped me during those tough months. Just going out with nothing but the camera, not knowing what I’d see. Slowly, I understood why Liv had always carried hers. Just being able to stop and capture a moment of a father giving his daughter a stick of candyfloss when the local fair was on, her face lighting up with a big smile. Or the moment a bird landed on a mailbox with a worm hanging out its mouth, ready to fly back to its nest and feed its young. My mum had met someone, and he started spending more and more time with us. We’d take trips up to the lake and have picnics in the sun. I could see she was happy again. I got a photo of them holding hands looking out into the sunset.

There is more to life than the bad things that happen. It’s easy to lose focus of that. You need the bad things to really appreciate the good. And there are so many good things when you slow down and notice them.

It was the last game of the season, and I’d begun to feel myself again. Stockholm can be a harsh place, especially during winter, but my thoughts for the first time moved on to what was next. It’s funny that I’d never really thought about it until now. Maybe it was because I felt like Sweden was my home now? The thing about home, though, is that it doesn’t have to be a particular place. Home, to me, is a state of mind. A feeling or an emotion. The people around you who you love and who love you. They’re also home. Our friends, they’re home. Those we have to let go, they’re also home, even if that might sound odd. All I know, is that I felt a clarity that I hadn’t felt in a long time, and for the first time in months, I was excited about what came next.

It was our final game of the season against Sydney, and the last time I’d pull on the Stockholm colours. I remember thinking what a nice day it was. The sun was out, but there was a cool breeze, which made the playing conditions perfect. Five minutes in, the ball fell to me just outside the centre-circle. I felt light. Moving felt effortless. Arsene made a run, and I knew exactly where he was going. One simple pass was all it took to send him on his way, and he put the ball away. 1-0.

We were looking sharp and finally playing without that weight on us. Like the shackles had been removed. But most of all, we were having fun and enjoying the moment, knowing that this was likely the last time we’d share the pitch as teammates. Sydney came back strong and took a 2-1 lead with twenty minutes played, but there was a determination about us that day. I knew we wouldn’t lose.

Dennis pulled us level just before the break. The whistle blew for half-time. Our last talk from the gaffer before we’d all move on to new destinations. There was a bittersweet energy in the dressing room. We went round the team and all said a few words about our time in the academy. When it got to me I told them it had been a pleasure sharing a pitch with them, and that there’s no one I’d have rather gone through those ups and downs with.

“...now let’s go win this match.”

We did come out for the second half a bit shaky, as Sydney took a 3-2 lead early on. I think it was more down to the emotion of the occasion and the reality hitting that this really was the end. We won a corner not long after and I said I’d take it. I knew the second I put the ball down where I wanted it to go…I whipped it in and there was Dennis to pull it back to 3-3 and settle those nerves.

I’d got two assists so far, but I remember feeling like I really wanted to finish the season on a high. I needed a goal. I’d had a few chances earlier on that went close, but I was playing in autopilot, I needed a bit more control and intention. I was willing someone to just make a mistake or something as the clock ticked down.

And in the 74th minute of the game it happened. What should’ve been a routine clearance by the Sydney player ended up being misjudged, the ball skimming off his head and fell straight to me on the corner of the 18-yard box. I saw Voxy darting into the box and it would’ve been a simple tap-in for him, and usually it would’ve been the pass that I’d made. But not now, this was something I needed to do for myself. I went all the way and curled it low past the keeper into the bottom corner from a tight angle. The away fans erupted and chanted my name. For the last time, this was my home and these people were my family.

I stayed behind at the training ground late that night. Just sitting in the warm spring evening, looking up at stars. I pulled out the photo Liv took of me. I looked so young. It felt like I was looking at someone else. So much had happened since the night she took that pic. There wasn’t much that remained of the boy in the photo, but there was one thing I felt then and still did now; I was excited for the future.

Thoughts turned to the upcoming Draft after that. Me and Kairo texted each other regularly about where we thought we’d end up, the possibility we could end up being picked up by the same team. It felt like a whole new world was opening up to us.

Then the day came. Weeks of speculation disappeared in what seemed like an instant. We all got together at the SSL Training Centre ready to be picked out one by one. A Scottish lad called Barry was selected first, which none of us were really surprised about. He was a different level on and off the pitch, and we all know he’ll go far. Names continued to be read out. Players who’d spent the last season together found themselves heading off to different parts of the world. Some will go right to the very top, others will fade in to obscurity, as is the nature of the sport. I wish them all the best though.

There were fist bumps, people celebrating. Others tried to hide their disappointment. Most of us just sat there trying to process it all. For so long the Draft had existed as some abstract idea somewhere in our futures but now it was actually happening.

Seven names had been read out. Me and Kairo sat next to each other, both still in the mix. I fully expected Kairo to be called out in the next couple of picks. I was a bit more tempered with my own expectations and expected to go at some point in the 2nd Round.

And then my name was read out.
“Pick 8 for Liffeyside Celtic FC, and they select...Jack Pow.”

Everything after that was a blur. The excitement, adrenaline, everyone around me patting me on the back and congratulating me. Apparently some more words were said about their reasoning and why they wanted me, but it wouldn’t be until I went home later that night, that I’d hear those reasons.

My friend Kairo was picked straight after me in pick 9. He’s off to Reykjavik. I gave him a bit of stick about being selected after me.

When I got home my mum and her new partner, his name is Lee by the way, congratulated me and we popped open a bottle of wine to celebrate. It was nice but I told them I’d had a long day and wanted to get some sleep. I got in bed and switched on the TV, and re-watched the biggest moment of my career so far.

“...I sometimes end my draft scouting by asking prospects to tell me someone in their class who’s a ‘sleeper pick.’ Jack was mentioned to me as a potential ‘sleeper pick’ so I went and scouted him and knew right away there was nothing ‘sleeper’ about him. We’re expecting great things, and can’t wait to get to work, may the luck of the Irish bless your career. Welcome to Liffeyside!”

It still didn’t feel real. But I knew I’d have to be patient before being able to pull on the green and black of Liffeyside. Rookies rarely go straight into the Majors, and it would be no different for me. I’d be starting off with FC Rova Mpanjaka in...Antananarivo, Madagascar. Halfway across the world in a city I’d never seen, in a country I could’ve never predicted I’d be living in. Strangely, the thought of that didn’t scare me as much as I thought it would. I knew next to nothing about the place and that excited me more than anything. But I’d moved once before, and I could do it again. Leaving one life to start another. I’d already learnt that home isn’t necessarily where you start. Sometimes it can be somewhere you haven’t found yet.

The next few evenings I had plenty of free time. I used it to walk alone through the city. Past the train stations that had become part of my daily routine. Past the empty pitches. Past apartment blocks glowing softly against the violet sky. The city looked exactly as it always had. How it did the first time I saw it from the car window after I landed here at the age of 11. But now it felt different. Because now I knew I was leaving.

I thought about my dad.

About my mum.

The friends I’d made along the way.

The people I’d lost.

The people I loved.

And every version of me that existed between then and now.

At 11 years old I arrived here believing I was leaving my life behind. I didn’t understand then that I was actually moving towards my life. And I still am.
I sat by the pitch one last time. A plane was flying above in the night sky. Soon, one of them would be carrying me south, to a whole new continent. It was time to stop looking back and to start looking forward. So that’s exactly what I did.

I have no clue who runs any of these teams, or who is really on them, so this is purely based on how I feel about their real life locations. It can be from personal experience (travel), vibes, anything really. I'll go in order and hand out letter grades then at the end sort every location out into one big list. C is the default for if I don't really have any opinions.

Schwarzwälder Fußballverein: A
Montreal United: C+
Combined: B+

I actually work for a German company that is headquartered in the province over from the Black Forest. I like my company quite a bit and I took German in high school so this is a pretty easy high grade for me.

I have no feelings about Montreal. I know Leonard Cohen is from there and I like Leonard Cohen a lot so it can have a C+. I know you've all heard Hallelujah but really there's a lot of good stuff in his catalogue, especially his final album.

Club Atlètico Buenos Aires: C
Athênai Football Club: S+
Combined: A

Buenos Aires is a pretty sick city state in Civilization 6 if I remember right. I also had a class in college that spent some time talking about the Peron's. Nothing else really comes to mind for me and neutrality is worth a C.

Athens gets an S+. I was a classical culture major in college so I just love all the ancient Greek stuff. Can't get enough of it. AND, I went there for my honeymoon. Loved every second I was in Athens, but my wife and I both got sick in Santorini so that one was kind of wasted. One of the favorite moments of my life was seeing the Mask of Agamemnon in person. Not even kidding. I could stare at that thing for hours.

Club de Futbol Catalunya: B
Seoul Mythic Football Club: A
Combined: A-

My wife really liked her trip to Barcelona, and I'd love to go someday as well. She's fluent in Spanish so we've even discussed retiring there. And you know I'm always down to support an independence movement.

I like K-pop, so that's worth some points. I also was pretty into starcraft (and starcraft 2) back in the day, and league of legends. So there's some tangential connections here to Korea that give enough positive vibes for me to toss an A down as the rank.

Hollywood Football Club: B-
Football Club Kaapstad: D
Combined: C-

Movies are pretty cool and I usually enjoy them. I've heard the weather is great, but the cost of living and traffic are similarly not so great. I'll settle them in for a respectable B-.

Never heard any good things about Cape Town, unfortunately. Would love to be proven wrong, though.

Liffeyside Celtic Football Club: A
Club Sportif Rova Mpanjaka: C+
Combined: B

Liffeyside is in the city of Dublin somewhere, presumably, and I have nothing but support and love for the Irish. That's an easy A.

I have never really thought about Madagascar outside of the movies and King Julian. Although I do think Julian is a funny little guy. That's enough for a C+ in my book. Oh, and the Tsingy de Bemaraha district is cool; that's another Civ thing, but it looks super cool.

Reykjavik United: S
North Shore United: A+
Combined: A+

I've been on a Reykjavik team in a completely unrelated league for like 6 years at this point and just stepped down from managing it. Very very fond memories of that team, and I'd love to visit some day. That's an S in my book.

After certain events in November of 2024, I looked at emigrating from the United States. There were only a couple options but after some (pretty exhaustive) research, my top destination was New Zealand. I've, unfortunately, never been so I can't speak from personal experience but I would've loved to move there. High marks!

Athletice Clava Romana: S
Inter London: B-
Combined: A

Refer to my previous blurb about Athens for how I feel about Rome. In college I took a class specifically dedicated to the history of Rome. Loved that class, and the professor. He was a cool guy. Hope he's doing well. Mario Erasmo! I actually almost got to go for study abroad (a truncated summer version) but things ended up falling through and it didn't happen. Oh well. One day, though, and I'll get to see everything. Can't wait.

London seems cool. I watch some British streamers and am forcibly exposed to lots of British culture so it seems like a fun enough place. Maybe I'll visit some day and see it for myself. Get a cheeky Nandos.

União São Paulo: C
Association Sportive de Paris: S+
Combined: A-

Sao Paolo is, in fact, a place that exists. I know it's a really big city but you're not getting much more out of me about it. I did have to write a paper on the independence of Brazil in a class about colonialism, but I got a C, so that's not getting them any points.

I got to visit Paris for only a long weekend back in 2018, when I got sent over to my company's headquarters for some training. I loved every single second of it. I could've spent all day in the Louvre but unfortunately I had limited time and other places to get to. But man, the Louvre. Worth every single euro.

Tokyo Sports Club: A
Cairo City Football Club: D-
Combined: C+

Okay my only experiences in Tokyo are the airport cause we had to connect through Tokyo to get to Osaka. I'm going to extrapolate from Osaka and assume Tokyo was pretty similar, but I had a wonderful time in Osaka. My (now) wife and I were visiting a friend and it was a really fun vacation.

If you remember how I said I had never heard anything good about Capetown, I've also never heard any good about Cairo, and perhaps even more widespread negative opinions. That might just be because people actually go to Cairo (and not Capetown) which paradoxically would raise the ranking, since people are willing to even try going there. Food for thought but I'm not hungry.

Shanghai Dragons Football Club: B+
Rapid Magyar Sport Club: C
Combined: B-

My aforementioned friend from the last blurb now lives in China and says it's amazing. I'll trust his word here and give them good marks. He's more northern than Shanghai but it'll be fine.

I'm not sure I have any feelings on the city of Budpest, beyond enjoying the chance to be annoying and correct people's pronunciation. I know Hungary recently voted out Orban which is pretty cool, but it's not pretty cool that he got elected in the first place so that's kind of a wash.

Club Deportivo Tenochtitlan: B+
Krung Thep Football Club: C

The concept of Tenochtitlan has always been fascinating to me. A city built on a lake! Very cool. I've also always like the Aztec mythos, and surprisingly I carry very few negative feelings of the from various Civilization games.

Bangkok is a place on Earth.

Xelajú Cósmico Fútbol Club: B

For those not in the know since it's not very explicit, this team is in Guatemala. I had a few friends growing up whose parents had immigrated from Guatemala, and they were all very nice and pleasant. That's my only real connection to the country; in terms of knowledge I think I just know about Banana Republics (and all the history therein) and CIA backed coups/civil wars (as one does in Central America, naturally).

The minors team is based in Côte d'Ivoire. I have never heard of either city before for both these clubs. Generally I like and support Côte d'Ivoire but there's no strong feelings. Just have to support

It’s been few weeks for Idris Nelson’s career output, he’s doing a good thing in the academy and he wishes to do well in the next, and first official team, the most important thing is that he doesn’t go up in flames for the stress, but he’s ego is not so big, he’s a guy that thinks for the team and his supporters. Some may think that it’s a normal thing for a defender, but there are players that only this about themselves and end up getting too many cards. When interviews, Nelson said that he really like Rio Ferdinand but Paolo Maldini is the second “in command” when thinking about how to make a decision. He really like teams that run less but do more on the field, Idris says, even though he shouldn’t talk about his secrets, that positioning is better than tackling. With the first one done good, you don’t have to end up onto the field. When we were interviewing him, the mom said hi to everyone. He joked and said, “now they really know our ancestors are italian too”. He likes italian music and… French movies. American ones are his really favorite one.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The transition to the Minor League with Krung Thep FC has started exactly the way we wanted, securing a hard-fought 3-2 away win against North Shore United. Between moving to a new squad, settling into a different dressing room, and hitting the training pitch full blast, it has been an incredibly hectic week. With all the chaos, I didn’t have the time to dive into a massive novel, so I picked up something short and sweet: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic short story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The story follows a man who is born old and wrinkly, and inexplicably ages backward. This makes him grow physically younger, faster, and more vital as the years pass. It is a quick, sharp tale about time and breaking free from the traditional expectations of aging. As I stepped onto the pitch for Matchday 1, I realized why this specific story had been on my mind. A decade ago, my playing career in the real world came to a natural end. By all normal football standards, my time at the top was done. Yet, here I am in the Minor League, surrounded by hungry rookies, feeling a completely new wind. My energy is back, my legs feel explosive, and the atmosphere in this young dressing room has given me an entirely new lease on life. It genuinely feels like I am aging in reverse.

In the story, Benjamin takes some time to adjust to his changing reality, finding himself caught between the wisdom of his actual years and the physical capabilities of his younger body. I felt that on the pitch against North Shore. I played the full 90 minutes, kept my passing clean at over 86%, and held my own, but the final product (the goal) wasn't there yet. I’m still figuring out how to balance the experience in my head with the raw youth in my legs. However, we took all three points on the road, and things are undeniably looking up. Fitzgerald's story is a quick reminder that living life out of order gives you a unique appreciation for the journey. I’m not worried about the scoresheet just yet. Meanwhile, I’m just enjoying the feeling of getting younger with every matchday.
