Joe had joined the club at the same time as five other youngsters coming from different academies around the world. He knew a couple of them slightly from their academy time, and that had probably played a part in creating an atmosphere that suited Joe. It was more the time spent away from the club that took a while to adjust to. He did go out with some of his teammates, especially his fellow teenagers, to places like the cinema, shopping, or the occasional shared meal or coffee. It was apparent that it was a little strange for all of them. After all, they were all strangers to the city, and there were many things they couldn’t quite do; playing other sports was prohibited outside of very casual play out of a concern that they get injured, and although one of them had invited the rest over to play video games on a console, it had felt rather unusual being a bunch of people over at their host family’s house. That experience hadn’t been repeated since.

Joe’s father, Tok, had at some point urged him over the phone to ensure that he explore the city while living there. To grasp the gift that he was given by making the best of it. To make sure he would not be another tourist in his own city of residence. With a decent amount of free time, Joe had tried to heed his advice. That was why he had started walking around the city to begin with; to get acquainted with his neighbourhood and the city that would be hosting him. Hearing an older player talk about connecting with the fans had further contributed to this sense of needing to get to know the city. Having long given up on the idea of learning Hungarian, Joe instead tried to learn Hungary. Not thinking to purchase a guide, or to look things up online, he sort of just picked out directions to walk in, and took in whatever he found there. He’d found several parks, a couple of cathedrals, and some old buildings he could only take to be castles. He was content to take it easy and get to know the city and the country as time went on. Before I could message them back to figure out what was going on exactly, my phone rang.  It was Kaz. Of course it was.

I answered.

"You doubted me, didn't you?  You doubted us."

It was his usual accusatory tone; I shouldn't have been surprised.

"Actually, I was telling people you had a chance, despite the odds."

It was true; I actually had been speaking to a few people, and had mentioned that despite the fact that they were playing against AS Paris, one of the top teams, and were expected to lose by a few goals at the least, I felt they might surprise people and keep up. Turns out I was right, but even I was surprised by how much I was right. While Kaapstad wasn't able to pull off a win against AS Paris, they were able to fight hard and earn themselves a 0-0 draw. 

"Well, either way, don't do it again."

He hung up after that. I wasn't sure if he was telling me not to doubt him or not to support them.  I wasn't about to ask.]]>

In the cup match, we were looking forward to getting our revenge and getting the win. It started pretty slow again, but this time we were able to score in the 29th minute with a goal by Greg Evil again, with an assist from Arsène N’Goussou, and a few minutes later we scored again in the 39th making it 2-0 going into halftime. It took until the 60th minute when we scored again going up 3-0, in the 81st minute Greg Evil completed a perfect hat-trick and 2 minutes later Arsène N’Goussou also scored making it 5-0. Eventually, in the 89th minute, Bruce McAllister scored ending the match in a 5-1 win for us.]]>

Average rating provides a broad overview of the league's most consistent performers and gives us a good starting point for looking at the attacking (or just anyone in this case) side of the league. With two players reaching a perfect 10.0 the top of the table is impressive while the gap to the rest of the top ten gradually gets bigger the further we get down.



Roquefort Cotswold and Zach Mulder share the top spot with a perfect 10.0 average rating. Setting a high benchmark for everyone else. João Mendes follows in third with an impressive 9.3 while Takaharu Suzuki and Arthur Cain complete the top five on 9.0 and 8.9 respectively.

The second half of the rankings remains close although the gaps start to become more noticeable. Ignignokt sits sixth on 8.7 followed by Matt Stro and Nick Dusk who share seventh on 8.6. Ryan O'Neill records 8.5 while Benjamin Munro rounds out the top ten on 8.3. With two players already sitting at a perfect rating, the leaderboard has started with a bang.

xG
Expected goals gives us an indication of the quality of the chances players are getting with higher values meaning the player is finding himself in better goalscoring situations. Dennis van Huntelrooy leads the league with an xG of 1.48, showing that he is not only very handsome but also a real threat in front of goal.



Mikko Rashford II follows closely behind on 1.31 while Ben Nelson and João Mendes share third place on 1.21. Arthur Cain rounds out the top five with 1.15 followed by Owen Goal on 1.10.

The bottom half of the top ten sees a bigger drop off with Zach Mulder at 0.84 and Nick Dusk at 0.80. Bonnibel Bubblegum and Vincent Haye both finish on 0.79. I believe we never have to look at this statistic again this season, van Huntelrooy will surely stay on top.

Shots give us a simple look at which players are most willing to have a go and once again Dennis van Huntelrooy finds himself at the top. The humble and smart striker recorded 9 shots narrowly beating Mikko Rashford II's 8.

Nick Dusk, Matt Stro, Rodiano Santori, Mullet Man and Arthur Cain all follow on 2 goals. Creating a sizeable group just behind the leaders. With five players tied on 2, there is clearly very little separating the chasing group.
Blaise N'Kufo, Ben Nelson and Michael Georgopolous round out the top ten with 1 goal each. While 3 goals is not exactly an enormous number, Mulder and Mendes have at least managed to establish themselves as the early leaders in the race for the golden boot.

Goals from outside the box are always a fun one to look at and this time we have three players sharing the top spot. Zach Mulder, Takaharu Suzuki and Mullet Man have each scored 1 goal from outside the box making them the only players in the top ten to have managed it.



The remaining seven players all sit on 0 goals outside the box. Alex Peña, Anthony Lee, Armero Staple, Arsène N'Goussou, Alex Stain, Adrian Scochnikov and Aleksandr Skovgaard. You didn't do anything, but here's a free shoutout anyway.

xG overperformance
xG overperformance shows us which players are scoring more goals than the quality of their chances would suggest. Zach Mulder leads the league by a considerable margin with an impressive 2.16 meaning he has massively outperformed the chances that the engine has given.



João Mendes follows on 1.79 with Rodiano Santori and Mullet Man close behind on 1.59 and 1.54 respectively. Matt Stro sits fifth on 1.35, while Nick Dusk rounds out the players above 1.0 with 1.20.

Arthur Cain, Michael Georgopolous, Scorp E. Unshark and Jakob Fensterhausen complete the top ten with values ranging from 0.85 down to 0.60. Mulder's 2.16 is the standout here and considering he also leads the league in goals alongside João Mendes. That is a great start to his season.

Predicted goals
Predicted goals is a slightly different statistic as these numbers come from my own beautiful prediction model to estimate how many goals each player would be expected to score based on their attacking output. Zach Mulder comes out on top by a considerable margin with the model predicting 35 goals for him.



Yoshisaur Munchakoopa follows with 28 predicted goals while João Mendes and Arthur Cain sit on 25 and 24 respectively. Nick Dusk is next on 17, before a four way tie between Ben Nelson, Matt Stro, Dennis van Huntelrooy and Owen Goal at 14.
Greg Evil also lands on 14 to complete the top ten. The model clearly rates Mulder's attacking output extremely highly with his predicted total sitting 7 goals above second place Yoshi Munchakoopa and a full 11 above João Mendes with whom he is currently tied on goals.

Offsides
Offsides are usually a good indicator that an attacker is constantly trying to get in behind the defence although there is obviously a fine line between being dangerous and simply not knowing how the rules work. Mikko Rashford II and Dennis van Huntelrooy lead the way with 3 offsides each.



Greg Evil, Owen Goal, Ryan O'Neill, Leonardo Stone, Blaise N'Kufo, David Doug II, Armero Staple and Stig Stampe all follow with 2 offsides each. That means the entire top ten is separated by just a single offside flag making this another close statistic.

Rashford II and Huntelrooy can at least claim the most ambitious runs in the league. Whether those runs were actually timed correctly is, of course, a completely different question and one that we sha'll not discuss today.

Striker impact
Striker impact is another statistic calculated using my handcrafted model. It is designed to measure the overall impact of a striker based on their attacking output. Rodiano Santori comes out on top with an impressive score of 10.30 and narrowly beating Benjamin Munro at 10.09.



Arthur Cain completes the top three with 9.88, followed by Vincent Haye on 8.41. There is then a noticeable drop to Greg Evil at 6.27 with the humble Dennis van Huntelrooy and Blaise N'Kufo following on 5.80 and 5.57 respectively.

Yoshisaur Munchakoopa follows with 28 predicted goals while João Mendes and Arthur Cain sit on 25 and 24 respectively. Nick Dusk is next on 17, before a four way tie between Ben Nelson, Matt Stro, Dennis van Huntelrooy and Owen Goal at 14.
Greg Evil also lands on 14 to complete the top ten. The model clearly rates Mulder's attacking output extremely highly with his predicted total sitting 7 goals above second place Yoshi Munchakoopa and a full 11 above João Mendes with whom he is currently tied on goals.

Offsides
Offsides are usually a good indicator that an attacker is constantly trying to get in behind the defence although there is obviously a fine line between being dangerous and simply not knowing how the rules work. Mikko Rashford II and Dennis van Huntelrooy lead the way with 3 offsides each.



Greg Evil, Owen Goal, Ryan O'Neill, Leonardo Stone, Blaise N'Kufo, David Doug II, Armero Staple and Stig Stampe all follow with 2 offsides each. That means the entire top ten is separated by just a single offside flag making this another close statistic.

Rashford II and Huntelrooy can at least claim the most ambitious runs in the league. Whether those runs were actually timed correctly is, of course, a completely different question and one that we sha'll not discuss today.

Striker impact
Striker impact is another statistic calculated using my handcrafted model. It is designed to measure the overall impact of a striker based on their attacking output. Rodiano Santori comes out on top with an impressive score of 10.30 and narrowly beating Benjamin Munro at 10.09.



Arthur Cain completes the top three with 9.88, followed by Vincent Haye on 8.41. There is then a noticeable drop to Greg Evil at 6.27 with the humble Dennis van Huntelrooy and Blaise N'Kufo following on 5.80 and 5.57 respectively.

Kuba Kunicki, Owen Goal and Barry McGlynn complete the top ten. With the Cup Qualifiers the NSU team were anxious to show they were underdogs with a lot of fight in them.  After conceding a goal in the 38th minute the team would rally back with 3 goals of their own all between the 67th and 80th minute.  The LR Casablanca would get one back in the 88th minute but NSU was able to hold them off to get a close win at 3-2.  Goalie Swiss Cheese was anxious to get back in the net after his injury in the opening game and his efforts would earn him the Player of the Match award.  We will have to wait and see next week if NSU can continue this momentum.]]>

A truly special game being played today. It will be CD Alfama's first ever cup tournament match in the teams history. Fans will be excited to see how the expansion team does in its first tournament match. For Gösta Holmberg, this match will mean a little bit more. His father, Kjell Holmberg, was a defender for Seoul MFC many years ago. Kjell would play for Seoul for multiple seasons, helping the team win Division 2 and earn promotion to Division 1 all the way back in Season 8. It will be an emotional game for Holmberg, to play against the team that he watched his dad play for when he was a young child. Hopefully those emotions won't effect him during his match today.

One minute into the match, Gösta gets his foot on a throw in near the corner in CD Alfama's end. Sadly for him, it ends up going to Santori who has time and space just inside the box. Luckily CD Alfama shuts down any chances and Wall Jr is able to get his hands on the ball.

At the 24th minute, Holmberg gets caught watching the game and has to chase down SCREAM as SCREAM runs the ball into the box. Holmberg is able to catch up just before the goal box and attempts a risky tackle from behind to knock the ball away from SCREAM. Luckily for Holmberg, it works. Unluckily for Holmberg, it goes straight to Santori who boots it low towards the far post. Wall Jr dives out and tips it wide to prevent another goal.

SCREAM attempts to swing a corner kick into the box at the 32nd minute mark, however Bǫllrstoppari reads it well and heads it back towards the edge of the box. Man attempts to settle the ball and clear it, but fails. Holmberg swoops in boots the ball down the sideline and gives his side a bit of time to regroup and reset in their defensive half.

A minute into extra time in the first half, Scochnikov takes a corner kick and sends it in to the goal box. A defender for Seoul MFC heads it off towards the edge of the box. There is enough air time for Holmberg to run over and head it right back into the pile of bodies in the box. A Seoul MFC heads it, but can't clear it and Plačkovič for CD Alfama heads it in and makes it 1-2 for CD Alfama. Not a direct assist for Holmberg, but the hustle was there that result in a goal to help cut Seoul's lead in half.

At the half, things aren't looking great for Holmberg. He hasn't impressed as far as highlights go, and he isn't having a strong game. He sits at 6.2 matching rating, with 6.7km ran and one clear cut chance. CD Alfama aren't having a fun game, getting outshot 6 to 18 at the half. The expected goals are 1.14 to 3.38, matching the half time score of 1-3 in favour of Seoul MFC.

Holmberg gets a pass from Man at the 53 minute of the game. He runs with the ball down the sideline, looking for a possible cross into the box. He puts the breaks on and gets the ball in a position where his dominant right foot could get an accurate cross off. Sadly, Shevchenko had other ideas and knocks it away from Holmberg and passes it up to Santori.

After 60 minutes into the match, SCREAM tries to chip the ball past Holmberg to get into CD Alfama's box. He stops the attempt, but it goes right back to SCREAM who takes a step back and then sends a cross that gets cleared out.

Man passes to Holmberg at the 77th minute, a bit behind Holmberg but he drops back and regroups. Facing little pressure, Holmberg figures his best move is to pass the ball back across center field and call it a day. The ball works its way back to Holmberg along the sideline and he has to race to try and chip the ball up to Bubblegum because SCREAM is screaming down on him trying to intercept the pass. It was an awful pass, and gets intercepted by Szarekh King and Seoul MFC is on the counterattack.

Of course, the rest of the field didn't make up much ground in the wake of Reykjavik's domination. The clear top one is now just a clear top two. The runner-up bunch is looking at a potential new competitor, though, as Uniao Sao Paulo is knocking on the door. The other interesting item of note is that we have yet another rebrand. Red Star Laos has failed to find success since their inception, standing as the only team with zero MacGuffin points. Will their rebrand to North Shore United finally bring success to the moribund franchise? Will Reykjavik United cut into Tokyo's long term domination? Will anyone join Uniao Sao Paulo to finally provide a major shakeup in the somewhat stale rankings? Let's dive in and find out!

Of course, the MacGuffin won't stay in the Minors as it ends the season with Inter London, who will be promoted in S14 after dominating the Minors this season. Still, this is one for the history books as far as the MacGuffin is concerned.

Clearly some clean slate mentality going on there. Of course, the Minors takeover is unlikely to last into S14. Season 26 gets its first entry into the Minors history books through Arsène N'Goussou, whose campaign for Rapid Magyar SC lands seventh in the Scorer rankings with a 96.40 score.

N'Goussou's 1.00 goal per 90 doesn't immediately look like the kind of number that should compete with Eric Belmont's ridiculous 1.77 or Charles-Andrew-Simon Utley-Abara-Lunga's 1.57, but this is another good example of why the Scorer ranking isn't simply a goals leaderboard.

The number that really stands out is 0.20 goals from outside the box per 90, the second-highest figure in the top ten behind only Red Panda. N'Goussou also massively outperformed their expected goals, finishing with an xG overperformance of 5.60. Only Belmont's 8.42 is higher among the players on this list.

Then you add 2.20 shots on target per 90 and 60% shot accuracy and there really isn't a major weakness in the profile.

The 0.63 xG per 90 is where N'Goussou gives up the most ground to the players at the very top. Since xG carries 20% of the score and goals another 30%, it's difficult to challenge players like Belmont when they're generating substantially more scoring opportunities.

Still, seventh-best Scorer season in Minors history is a pretty good way to introduce season 26 to these rankings. N'Goussou didn't get there by producing the most chances. They got there by making an awful lot out of the chances they had.

Jay Cue Jr.
Jay Cue Jr. didn't just make the Defender top ten in season 26. They nearly took the entire thing over.

Their campaign for CS Rova Mpanjaka enters at second overall with an 87.70 score, only 0.5 points behind Orlando Mastache Maldonado's s19 season.

The number that immediately explains the ranking is an 89.09% tackle rate. That's the best tackling efficiency anywhere in the updated top ten. Considering tackles won and tackle percentage combine for 45% of the Defender score, being that efficient gives Cue an enormous advantage.

But this isn't just an efficiency-driven season. Cue still won 3.27 tackles per 90 while producing 3.40 interceptions, 1.40 clearances, 1.00 blocks, and 3.07 successful presses. Add a 63.08% header rate and you're looking at a player who contributed something in every single category used by the formula.

There are players above and below Cue with more spectacular individual numbers. Alex Stain produced 4.50 tackles won per 90. Jan Van Doorne had 5.15 successful presses. Chris Warrick won an absurd 87.50% of their headers.

Cue's advantage is that there isn't really a bad number anywhere.

That's exactly the kind of performance this formula tends to reward. Instead of dominating one defensive action, Cue combined elite tackling efficiency with strong production everywhere else and came within half a point of producing the best Defender season Minors has ever seen.

STAR SCREAM
Jay Cue Jr. isn't the only season 26 player breaking into the Defender rankings. STAR SCREAM's campaign for Seoul MFC also makes the list, entering ninth with an 84.70 score.

Where Cue's season is built around elite tackling efficiency, STAR SCREAM takes a different route.

The standout number is 2.93 clearances per 90, the highest figure in the entire updated top ten. That's paired with 3.20 tackles won, an 81.36% tackle rate, 2.87 interceptions, 0.93 blocks, and 3.00 successful presses per 90.

None of those other numbers jump off the page individually, but they're all competitive.

That's important in a Defender formula spread across seven different statistics. Clearances only account for 10% of the score, so leading that category isn't enough by itself. STAR SCREAM needed to remain productive across tackling, interceptions, pressing, blocking, and aerial play as well.

The result isn't quite as spectacular as Cue's second-place finish, but it gives season 26 two of the ten best defensive campaigns in Minors history.

For a category designed to reward complete defensive players rather than specialists, that's a pretty impressive showing from the current class.

Bob Berendsen was already all over these Minors rankings before season 26.

Apparently they weren't finished.

Berendsen's s26 campaign for AS Paris enters the Wide Creator rankings in ninth place with a 95.50 score, adding another historical season to a résumé that already includes elite Playmaker and Dribbler performances.

The foundation here is crossing volume. Berendsen produced 4.47 successful crosses per 90, which trails only Dwayne Pruney's 4.80 among the updated top ten. Since successful crosses account for 35% of the entire score, that's a very good place to start.

But Berendsen also backs that up with 1.60 chances created and an excellent 3.73 open-play key passes per 90. Only Zizou Lopta produces more open-play key passes among the top ten. Add 0.73 assists per 90 and the end product is there as well.

The biggest thing preventing Berendsen from climbing higher is crossing efficiency. Their 32.84% success rate is the lowest figure on the list. Cross percentage carries another 25% of the score, meaning 60% of this entire category comes from those two crossing metrics.

Berendsen essentially overwhelms that weakness with volume and creativity.

And this isn't even their only appearance from season 26….

The same season that puts Bob Berendsen ninth in Wide Creator also lands eighth in the Dribbler rankings with a 97.20 score.

This time, though, the way they get there is almost completely different.

Berendsen's 3.13 dribbles per 90 is actually one of the lowest figures in the updated top ten. Considering dribbles account for 40% of the score, you would normally expect that to make a historical ranking extremely difficult.

Then you look at everything else.

Berendsen produced 6.27 key passes and 9.27 progressive passes per 90. Only Angry Lizard's s23 season has more progressive passes, while Berendsen's key-pass production is right alongside some of the very best seasons on the list. They also created 1.60 chances and produced 0.73 assists per 90.

So while the actual dribbling volume isn't historically dominant, what happens after Berendsen moves the ball forward absolutely is.

It also makes their double appearance particularly interesting. The same season produced enough crossing to become the ninth-best Wide Creator campaign in Minors history while also generating enough ball progression and creativity to rank eighth as a Dribbler.

That's exactly why looking at roles can be more interesting than looking at positions. Berendsen isn't just doing one job extremely well. The numbers suggest they were impacting attacks in several completely different ways.


Goalkeeper Role

Benecio Aguilera III
Season 26 makes a substantial impact on the Goalkeeper rankings, starting with Benecio Aguilera III's campaign for AS Paris entering fifth overall with an 86.90 score.

Aguilera's 87.30% save rate is immediately eye-catching. It's the second-highest figure in the updated top ten, trailing only Scott Sterling's 88.46%. That's especially valuable when Save Percentage accounts for 25% of the entire Goalkeeper score.

The rest of the profile is solid as well. Aguilera posted a 7.35 average rating, an 85.61% xSave rate, prevented 0.28 xG per 90, and recorded 0.47 clean sheets per 90.

There isn't one ridiculous outlier carrying the performance. Instead, Aguilera is competitive almost everywhere while being exceptional at actually keeping shots out of the goal.

Where the season loses ground against the very top is xG prevented. João Cancelo, James Asprey, Joseph Daniel Kakou, and several others prevented considerably more expected goals per 90. Aguilera also didn't record a penalty save, removing another opportunity to pick up points in the formula.

Still, fifth place historically is a huge result. And with AS Paris already owning the number one spot through João Cancelo's s25 campaign, Aguilera gives the club two of the five highest-rated goalkeeper seasons in Minors history.

Rean Schwarzer
Benecio Aguilera III isn't alone.

Rean Schwarzer's s26 season for CS Rova Mpanjaka also enters the Goalkeeper rankings, landing seventh with an 84.40 score.

Schwarzer takes a slightly different route to the list. Their 7.38 average rating is among the strongest in the group, while an 83.12% save rate and 0.38 xG prevented per 90 give them solid production in two of the formula's other heavily weighted categories.

The 0.38 xG prevented figure is particularly important. It trails the very best seasons on the list, but it's still better than Aguilera directly above them and gives Schwarzer a strong goal-prevention component beyond simply making saves.

Where Schwarzer gives up ground is xSave and clean sheets. An 83.58% xSave rate is toward the lower end of the historical top ten, while 0.33 clean sheets per 90 trails most of the players around them. Like Aguilera, there also isn't a penalty save available to provide that final little boost.

Even so, season 26 putting two different goalkeepers into the historical top seven is notable.

The Goalkeeper rankings were already heavily tilted toward recent seasons, and s26 only pushes that trend further. Five of the top seven performances now come from seasons 24 through 26.

Whatever is happening with modern Minors goalkeepers, they seem determined to take over this list.



Conclusion
Season 26 definitely left a mark in the Minors record book.

Seven new entries from six different players made their way into the historical top tens, with their scores spread across Scorer, Defender, Wide Creator, Dribbler, and Goalkeeper. More importantly, several didn't only just scrape into the bottom of the rankings.

Jay Cue Jr. came within 0.5 points of taking the number one Defender spot outright. Arsène N'Goussou produced the seventh-best Scorer season on record. Benecio Aguilera III jumped directly into the top five among goalkeepers. And Bob Berendsen managed to turn one season into two separate historical creative performances.

That last one may be my favorite part of the update (yes, I’m biased for my team).

These rankings were created because positions don't always tell us what a player actually did on the field. Berendsen's season is a perfect example. The same player can rank historically as both a Wide Creator and Dribbler because the underlying numbers show two different ways they were impacting attacks.

Then you have Jay Cue Jr. nearly reaching the top of an entirely different role through defensive efficiency, while two s26 goalkeepers continue what is becoming a pretty obvious trend of recent seasons dominating that category.

There were still some lists season 26 couldn't touch. Nobody broke into Playmaker, Passer, Presser, or Aerial (and realistically, I doubt anyone breaks into Aerial), and none of the existing number one performances were knocked off their spot.
But that's also what makes the new entries meaningful.

Every additional season makes these lists harder to crack. The historical pool gets larger, the established elite seasons remain, and a new player has to produce something exceptional enough to push somebody else out.

Season 26 gets its first entry into the Minors history books through Arsène N'Goussou, whose campaign for Rapid Magyar SC lands seventh in the Scorer rankings with a 96.40 score.

N'Goussou's 1.00 goal per 90 doesn't immediately look like the kind of number that should compete with Eric Belmont's ridiculous 1.77 or Charles-Andrew-Simon Utley-Abara-Lunga's 1.57, but this is another good example of why the Scorer ranking isn't simply a goals leaderboard.

The number that really stands out is 0.20 goals from outside the box per 90, the second-highest figure in the top ten behind only Red Panda. N'Goussou also massively outperformed their expected goals, finishing with an xG overperformance of 5.60. Only Belmont's 8.42 is higher among the players on this list.

Then you add 2.20 shots on target per 90 and 60% shot accuracy and there really isn't a major weakness in the profile.

The 0.63 xG per 90 is where N'Goussou gives up the most ground to the players at the very top. Since xG carries 20% of the score and goals another 30%, it's difficult to challenge players like Belmont when they're generating substantially more scoring opportunities.

Still, seventh-best Scorer season in Minors history is a pretty good way to introduce season 26 to these rankings. N'Goussou didn't get there by producing the most chances. They got there by making an awful lot out of the chances they had.

Jay Cue Jr.
Jay Cue Jr. didn't just make the Defender top ten in season 26. They nearly took the entire thing over.

Their campaign for CS Rova Mpanjaka enters at second overall with an 87.70 score, only 0.5 points behind Orlando Mastache Maldonado's s19 season.

The number that immediately explains the ranking is an 89.09% tackle rate. That's the best tackling efficiency anywhere in the updated top ten. Considering tackles won and tackle percentage combine for 45% of the Defender score, being that efficient gives Cue an enormous advantage.

But this isn't just an efficiency-driven season. Cue still won 3.27 tackles per 90 while producing 3.40 interceptions, 1.40 clearances, 1.00 blocks, and 3.07 successful presses. Add a 63.08% header rate and you're looking at a player who contributed something in every single category used by the formula.

There are players above and below Cue with more spectacular individual numbers. Alex Stain produced 4.50 tackles won per 90. Jan Van Doorne had 5.15 successful presses. Chris Warrick won an absurd 87.50% of their headers.

Cue's advantage is that there isn't really a bad number anywhere.

That's exactly the kind of performance this formula tends to reward. Instead of dominating one defensive action, Cue combined elite tackling efficiency with strong production everywhere else and came within half a point of producing the best Defender season Minors has ever seen.

STAR SCREAM
Jay Cue Jr. isn't the only season 26 player breaking into the Defender rankings. STAR SCREAM's campaign for Seoul MFC also makes the list, entering ninth with an 84.70 score.

Where Cue's season is built around elite tackling efficiency, STAR SCREAM takes a different route.

The standout number is 2.93 clearances per 90, the highest figure in the entire updated top ten. That's paired with 3.20 tackles won, an 81.36% tackle rate, 2.87 interceptions, 0.93 blocks, and 3.00 successful presses per 90.

None of those other numbers jump off the page individually, but they're all competitive.

That's important in a Defender formula spread across seven different statistics. Clearances only account for 10% of the score, so leading that category isn't enough by itself. STAR SCREAM needed to remain productive across tackling, interceptions, pressing, blocking, and aerial play as well.

The result isn't quite as spectacular as Cue's second-place finish, but it gives season 26 two of the ten best defensive campaigns in Minors history.

For a category designed to reward complete defensive players rather than specialists, that's a pretty impressive showing from the current class.

Bob Berendsen was already all over these Minors rankings before season 26.

Apparently they weren't finished.

Berendsen's s26 campaign for AS Paris enters the Wide Creator rankings in ninth place with a 95.50 score, adding another historical season to a résumé that already includes elite Playmaker and Dribbler performances.

The foundation here is crossing volume. Berendsen produced 4.47 successful crosses per 90, which trails only Dwayne Pruney's 4.80 among the updated top ten. Since successful crosses account for 35% of the entire score, that's a very good place to start.

But Berendsen also backs that up with 1.60 chances created and an excellent 3.73 open-play key passes per 90. Only Zizou Lopta produces more open-play key passes among the top ten. Add 0.73 assists per 90 and the end product is there as well.

The biggest thing preventing Berendsen from climbing higher is crossing efficiency. Their 32.84% success rate is the lowest figure on the list. Cross percentage carries another 25% of the score, meaning 60% of this entire category comes from those two crossing metrics.

Berendsen essentially overwhelms that weakness with volume and creativity.

And this isn't even their only appearance from season 26….



Dribbler Role

The same season that puts Bob Berendsen ninth in Wide Creator also lands eighth in the Dribbler rankings with a 97.20 score.

This time, though, the way they get there is almost completely different.

Berendsen's 3.13 dribbles per 90 is actually one of the lowest figures in the updated top ten. Considering dribbles account for 40% of the score, you would normally expect that to make a historical ranking extremely difficult.

Then you look at everything else.

Berendsen produced 6.27 key passes and 9.27 progressive passes per 90. Only Angry Lizard's s23 season has more progressive passes, while Berendsen's key-pass production is right alongside some of the very best seasons on the list. They also created 1.60 chances and produced 0.73 assists per 90.

So while the actual dribbling volume isn't historically dominant, what happens after Berendsen moves the ball forward absolutely is.

It also makes their double appearance particularly interesting. The same season produced enough crossing to become the ninth-best Wide Creator campaign in Minors history while also generating enough ball progression and creativity to rank eighth as a Dribbler.

That's exactly why looking at roles can be more interesting than looking at positions. Berendsen isn't just doing one job extremely well. The numbers suggest they were impacting attacks in several completely different ways.


Goalkeeper Role

Benecio Aguilera III
Season 26 makes a substantial impact on the Goalkeeper rankings, starting with Benecio Aguilera III's campaign for AS Paris entering fifth overall with an 86.90 score.

Aguilera's 87.30% save rate is immediately eye-catching. It's the second-highest figure in the updated top ten, trailing only Scott Sterling's 88.46%. That's especially valuable when Save Percentage accounts for 25% of the entire Goalkeeper score.

The rest of the profile is solid as well. Aguilera posted a 7.35 average rating, an 85.61% xSave rate, prevented 0.28 xG per 90, and recorded 0.47 clean sheets per 90.

There isn't one ridiculous outlier carrying the performance. Instead, Aguilera is competitive almost everywhere while being exceptional at actually keeping shots out of the goal.

Where the season loses ground against the very top is xG prevented. João Cancelo, James Asprey, Joseph Daniel Kakou, and several others prevented considerably more expected goals per 90. Aguilera also didn't record a penalty save, removing another opportunity to pick up points in the formula.

Still, fifth place historically is a huge result. And with AS Paris already owning the number one spot through João Cancelo's s25 campaign, Aguilera gives the club two of the five highest-rated goalkeeper seasons in Minors history.

Rean Schwarzer
Benecio Aguilera III isn't alone.

Rean Schwarzer's s26 season for CS Rova Mpanjaka also enters the Goalkeeper rankings, landing seventh with an 84.40 score.

Schwarzer takes a slightly different route to the list. Their 7.38 average rating is among the strongest in the group, while an 83.12% save rate and 0.38 xG prevented per 90 give them solid production in two of the formula's other heavily weighted categories.

The 0.38 xG prevented figure is particularly important. It trails the very best seasons on the list, but it's still better than Aguilera directly above them and gives Schwarzer a strong goal-prevention component beyond simply making saves.

Where Schwarzer gives up ground is xSave and clean sheets. An 83.58% xSave rate is toward the lower end of the historical top ten, while 0.33 clean sheets per 90 trails most of the players around them. Like Aguilera, there also isn't a penalty save available to provide that final little boost.

Even so, season 26 putting two different goalkeepers into the historical top seven is notable.

The Goalkeeper rankings were already heavily tilted toward recent seasons, and s26 only pushes that trend further. Five of the top seven performances now come from seasons 24 through 26.

Whatever is happening with modern Minors goalkeepers, they seem determined to take over this list.



Conclusion
Season 26 definitely left a mark in the Minors record book.

Seven new entries from six different players made their way into the historical top tens, with their scores spread across Scorer, Defender, Wide Creator, Dribbler, and Goalkeeper. More importantly, several didn't only just scrape into the bottom of the rankings.

Jay Cue Jr. came within 0.5 points of taking the number one Defender spot outright. Arsène N'Goussou produced the seventh-best Scorer season on record. Benecio Aguilera III jumped directly into the top five among goalkeepers. And Bob Berendsen managed to turn one season into two separate historical creative performances.

That last one may be my favorite part of the update (yes, I’m biased for my team).

These rankings were created because positions don't always tell us what a player actually did on the field. Berendsen's season is a perfect example. The same player can rank historically as both a Wide Creator and Dribbler because the underlying numbers show two different ways they were impacting attacks.

Then you have Jay Cue Jr. nearly reaching the top of an entirely different role through defensive efficiency, while two s26 goalkeepers continue what is becoming a pretty obvious trend of recent seasons dominating that category.

There were still some lists season 26 couldn't touch. Nobody broke into Playmaker, Passer, Presser, or Aerial (and realistically, I doubt anyone breaks into Aerial), and none of the existing number one performances were knocked off their spot.
But that's also what makes the new entries meaningful.

Every additional season makes these lists harder to crack. The historical pool gets larger, the established elite seasons remain, and a new player has to produce something exceptional enough to push somebody else out.
