The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
It has been a wild couple of weeks. Our results have been all over the place. First, losing 5-3 to Sydney and then bouncing back 4-2 against Port Royal. Followed up by getting thrashed 5-1 by Atlético into a whiplash inducing 5-3 win against Stockholm. When the results go up and down like that, the noise outside the club gets loud. To help tune it out, I picked up Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.

I’ll admit, the modern football world has been an adjustment for me. Back when I was playing ten years ago, we had media pressure, sure. But we didn't have this insane social media footprint. Nowadays, fans are posting clips from the training field on TikTok, and hundreds of people are instantly commenting on your form before you’ve even hit the showers. For a bit, it actually got to me. When you're running your lungs out but the goals aren't coming, reading all that negativity online makes you doubt yourself. Manson’s book talks about how we only have a limited amount of "f*cks" to give in life. These are not to be wasted on things you can't control, like internet comments, or you are just ruining your own focus.

Manson argues that the key to a good life isn’t pretending everything is fine, but choosing what actually matters to you. For me, what matters isn’t what some guy on Twitter or some other forum thinks about my finishing. What matters is the work I put in on the pitch, my physical fitness, and helping Adowa Accra win. I decided to stop giving a f*ck about the online critics, and honestly, the relief was instant. I shook off the doubt, played with total freedom in our last match against Stockholm, and walked away with a hat-trick in our 5-3 win. It’s a simple, blunt book, but for any athlete dealing with the modern pressure of the internet, it’s a necessary reminder. Do your job, let them talk, and keep your focus where it belongs.

In the sunset of dissolution, everything is illuminated by the aura of nostalgia, even the guillotine.
